How does laser hair reduction work?
Laser hair reduction works by heating up the hair shaft with an intense pulse of light or laser. The heat from the hair shaft diffuses into the surrounding cells that produce the hair and damages them.

The hair reduction machine used at the Wessex Skin Clinic, then further heats the hair-producing cells with radio-frequency. This allows more effective treatment of finer and lighter coloured hairs.

Is it safe?
Yes, providing that the correct settings are used for your skin type and hair density and the operator treats the skin methodically.

Which areas can be treated?
Any area of unwanted hair growth can be treated but treatment must be approached more cautiously over bone e.g. on the back of the hands and in people with dark skin.

Which machines work best?
I believe that the skill and experience of the person carrying out the treatment is as important as the device. This skin needs to be treated confidently and aggressively to get good results without being over heated.

This can only be achieved with powerful, medical-grade machines.

Does it hurt?
Each pulse feels like a flick from a rubber band. Most people comment that laser hair reduction is less uncomfortable than waxing.

At the Wessex Skin Clinic, if you find the treatment uncomfortable, we will use local anaesthetic cream, cool packs and cool the skin with a stream of ice-cold air to make the treatment more comfortable for you.

How should I prepare for treatment?
A clear skin is the key to getting the best results.

All vestiges of suntan must be removed by wearing a sunscreen before and during treatment. People with darker skin types will benefit from using a prescription-only skin lightening cream.

What does treatment involve?
A gel is applied to the treatment area. Treatment begins with the machine on a low setting and the power is increased as you become confident that you can tolerate the treatment.

How will I look immediately after treatment?
The skin may be red and slightly swollen immediately treatment but this reaction settles fairly quickly and can be disguised with makeup.

Is there any important aftercare?
If you are treated at the Wessex Skin Clinic, you will be given an information sheet detailing the instructions that you should follow after the treatment and an emergency contact number to call in the unlikely event that you encounter any problems.

How many treatments will I need?
In general, unwanted hair on the limbs or body will be satisfactorily reduced after four treatments but that on the face six treatments are needed to achieve a comparable result.

People with darker skin or underlying hormone problems will need more treatments.

How long does laser hair reduction treatment last?
Body hair may be permanently reduced. Facial hair will need some maintenance treatment.

Are there any side-effects?
Anticipated

•Redness - usually settles within a few hours.

•Swelling - usually mild and lasting a few hours.

•Brown marks - clear in five days.

Unanticipated

•Small blisters - heal without leaving marks, if treated correctly.

•Scarring - rare when treatment is carried out with medical-grade machines.

Who shouldn't have treatment?
•If the treatment area has been exposed to strong sunlight within the last week

•If you are prone to forming keloid scars, you should seek treatment in expert hands only
