During 2009 MediZen celebrated their 10th year of helping thousands of our clients to feel more confident. We're NOT a Beauty Salon and we're NOT a Cosmetic Surgery Clinic. MediZen are one of the few clinics in Birmingham and the UK who specialise in offering carefully researched non-surgical aesthetic treatments backed by medical evidence.
It can be difficult to choose a clinic from glossy websites and leaflets – especially if you’re on a tight budget where the tendency may be to choose the lowest price! Some of our staff have worked in medical aesthetics for over a decade, and they know that there are huge differences between clinics and individual practitioners. Our experience would indicate that, when it comes to medical treatments on your face or body, you may want to consider the old adage “you get what you pay forâ€!
MediZen offer a SAFE and effective service. We don’t cut corners, and invest in staff training and buying the best equipment. We NEVER compromise your safety by trying to save money re-using certain items of equipment that should be disposable – yes, this does happen in some clinics!
MediZen have won "Best Small Business" in Sutton Coldfield, Tamworth and Lichfield for two consecutive years - 2008 and 2009.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) / Laser Hair Removal Clinic
The use of light as a medical treatment has grown significantly in recent years.
Now, there are a number of devices which use light for a variety of medical treatments.
Ultra - Violet light, for example, has been used to treat psoriasis (a chronic skin disease) for many years, and some people use light boxes during the winter to reduce the symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and improve their mood.
The use of Laser light for medical procedures began in the 1960s and Laser alongside newer Intense Pulsed Light technology has developed over the last few decades to treat a variety of different skin problems - including the effects of sun damage, thread veins and pigmentation problems.
What is Laser or Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and how does it work?
Lasers and IPL systems all work on the same principle of absorption of light energy into a particular target pigment colour (chromophore) in the skin. The light energy is converted to heat energy which causes damage to the specific target area.
Intense Pulsed Light systems are different from lasers in that they can deliver hundreds of wavelengths (or colours) in each burst of light instead of just one wavelength. Certain filters are used that target these flashes of light so that they can work in a similar way to lasers.
In the case of hair removal, pigment contained in the hair shaft can be targeted as can the hair follicle or root with light generated by the Laser or IPL system.
This energy heats up the base of the hair follicle, which causes damage to the cells that produce hair growth. If enough damage is done, this will prevent the hair from growing any further.
The effect is most obvious during, what is known as, the anagen phase of hair growth. That is when new hairs start to grow, and during this period of growth the hair follicle has increased pigmentation and growth of new cells that makes it more open to damage from light treatment.
This also explains why Laser and Intense Pulsed Light hair removal is not a one-off treatment. Hair follicles that are resting or shedding hair will not be significantly affected by the light energy and will
re-grow in time.
