Laser Hair Removal

Unwanted body and facial hair can be very distressing for some people. People who come to us for help with this problem have usually tried all the older techniques (shaving, waxing or electrolysis) but somehow it just isn’t right for them. Laser hair removal can be the answer to your prayers.

Any area of the body with unwanted hair can be treated using laser. Unwanted facial hair removal is the most common form of laser hair removal treatment. The bikini line, legs, underarms and the back are other popular areas for permanent hair removal. Only darker hair types are suitable for lazer hair removal treatment, as blond hair does not contain the pigment needed for laser to be effective. The pigment (melanin) in the hair absorbs energy from the laser, causing inflammation which causes hair follicles to go into their resting state. Because hair growth is cyclical, you need at least three treatment sessions at about six week intervals. Eighty percent of people need between four and seven laser hair removal treatment sessions to achieve permanent hair reduction. Plucking and electrolysis must be stopped between laser hair removal treatment sessions, although shaving the area is acceptable.

After an initial consultation, the first step is to carry out a test patch to determine the correct laser parameters for your skin. A week or so later, treatment can begin in earnest. Lazer hair removal treatment is usually well tolerated, although there may on occasion be some slight discomfort during treatment. A good description is like being ‘pinged’ with an elastic band. The lasers we use automatically cool the skin to minimize any discomfort. Laser hair removal treatment sessions last from a few minutes to an hour, depending on the size of the area to be treated. After treatment, the skin may be slightly red for a few hours, but you can return to normal activities immediately.

After all types of laser treatment it is imperative that you avoid direct sun exposure and routinely (that means always!) wear a sunscreen with a minimum SPF 30. Makeup can be applied to the treated area immediately if desired.

Because of the cyclical nature of hair growth, results may take time to be noticeable. This treatment is definitely not a ‘quick fix’! However, after a few months noticeable improvement will occur, with very obvious results after five or six treatments. This reduction in unwanted hair is permanent, although most people will need a ‘top up’ treatment perhaps once a year to maintain control of the problem. Although treatment does need to be carried out over several sessions, laser hair removal is currently the most effective solution for unwanted hair.

Possible risks and side effects of laser hair removal treatment include:
• short-term redness or swelling (this is common)
• transient localized pain or stinging sensation during treatment
• laser induced "cold-sore-like" blistering
• infection and scar formation
• a decrease or increase in skin colour at the site of treatment
• a poor cosmetic outcome, including hair re-growth at the treatment site
• eye injury due to use of the laser is a risk to the patient and to the clinician; the risks are dramatically reduced with the correct use of proper eyewear and adherence to our rigorous safety policies.
